Role Overview & Responsibilities
We are looking for an experienced and motivated Transport Manager to lead and develop Focus Birmingham’s transport service, ensuring safe, reliable and efficient transport for the people accessing our services.
This is a key operational leadership role where you will oversee the day-to-day delivery of our transport service, ensuring vehicles, routes and staffing are effectively planned and managed while maintaining high standards of safety, compliance and service quality.
You will take responsibility for route planning, fleet utilisation and transport capacity, making sure our resources are used effectively and that services continue to meet the changing needs of the people we support.
As Focus Birmingham continues to develop and expand its services, you will play an important role in creating scalable transport solutions to support increased capacity. You will also identify and develop community transport opportunities that make greater use of our vehicles, increase our impact and explore opportunities to generate additional income.
Safety and compliance will be central to the role. You will ensure our transport operations meet all relevant legislation, licensing and safety requirements, including requirements relating to driver compliance and D1 licences. You will oversee vehicle maintenance, inspections and documentation and ensure appropriate risk assessments and safeguarding arrangements are embedded within day-to-day transport operations.
As Transport Manager, you will provide leadership and support to the Transport Coordinator and Drivers, ensuring the team is appropriately trained, supported and able to carry out their roles safely and effectively. You will help create a positive, supportive and safety-focused culture where expectations are clear and good performance is recognised and developed.
You will work closely with colleagues across Focus Birmingham, as well as families and external partners, to ensure transport arrangements meet individual and service needs. Clear communication will be important, particularly when managing changes, resolving operational issues or introducing service improvements.
You will monitor transport performance, vehicle utilisation, costs and route efficiency, using information and data to identify opportunities for improvement and provide reports and insights to support organisational decision-making.
Continuous improvement will be an important part of the role. You will look for opportunities to improve efficiency, safety, reliability and service quality while supporting innovation and the longer-term development of Focus Birmingham’s transport provision.
Person Specification
Essential
- Experience working within transport, logistics or fleet management
- Good knowledge of relevant transport legislation, compliance and safety requirements
- Understanding of D1 licence requirements and driver compliance
- Experience managing staff and day-to-day operations
- Experience planning and coordinating transport services, routes, vehicles or staffing
- Strong organisational and planning skills
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills
- Ability to manage risk and make effective decisions under pressure
- Ability to monitor operational performance and identify areas for improvement
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with colleagues, families and external partners
- Ability to lead, support and motivate a team
- Ability to work effectively as part of a wider organisation while taking responsibility for the transport service
Desirable
- Experience working within community or accessible transport
- Experience or knowledge of working with people with disabilities or additional needs
- Relevant transport qualifications or licences
- Experience developing or expanding transport services
- Experience monitoring fleet utilisation, transport costs or operational performance
- Experience identifying opportunities to improve efficiency or generate income from transport services
